"Occurrence" is a widely...Cheers David.

"Occurrence" is a widely used term in biodiversity informatics that is covers specimen collections and observations of species. A record will typically consist of (at least) 4 components:

1) What - a species or subspecies or higher level taxon if identification to species level isnt possibility
2) Where - typically geographical coordinates, but could be a locality description
3) When - a single date or date range
4) Whom - who recorded the observation or collected the specimen.

I agree on the subjectivity of the outliers. Essentially the approach here is to allow researchers scientists to filter records marked by the ALA as outliers if they want, but not to prevent access to any of the data. Hence researchers can use our outlier annotations on the records if they think it meets there needs and/or they agree with the techniques used.

Dave Martinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15236961259181793280noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3547477474470281857.post-83410292714113751982012-09-10T04:24:44.734-07:002012-09-10T04:24:44.734-07:00Are there going to be any scalability tests or rob...Are there going to be any scalability tests or robustness checks? Will it mean a species is saved, will it help an ecosystem? What other biodiversity portals and analystics tools are likely to use our outputs. Perhaps even these tools are generic enough to be used by other disciplines? A picture/diagram might help better convey the larger purpose of the project as well?

Though I get what you are doing on the programmatic level, a nice clear explanation - thanks :)David F.
